Adjusting optical power on the switch

Optical power on a switch can be configured by adjusting the transmit power of the optical transceiver or module, using vendor-specific commands and monitoring tools.

Understanding Optical Power

Optical power refers to the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) power levels of fiber optic transceivers. Proper configuration ensures reliable signal transmission and prevents errors caused by low or excessive power. Most modern switches support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) to view real-time optical power, temperature, voltage, and laser bias current.

Vendor-

Specific Configuration

Juniper Switches/Routers: Enter configuration mode and navigate to the optical interface. Use the command: set interfaces optics-options tx-power to adjust transmit power. The allowed range depends on the SFP/QSFP type and vendor specifications.

Huawei Switches: Use display transceiver [interface interface-type interface-number | slot slot-id] to view optical module information. Use display transceiver diagnosis interface to check digital diagnostic monitoring (DMM) data, including Tx/Rx power. Adjustments may require replacing the module with one that supports the desired power range.

Cisco NC

S Optical Modules: Clear previous module configurations before installing a new module. Configure optical amplifier modules using commands like configure hw-module location ampli flex-mode or grid-mode gridless to optimize channel power and spectrum. Automatic Power Control (APC) can regulate per-channel power.

Dell EMC Power

Switch: Optical transceivers comply with Class 1 laser safety standards. Use vendor documentation to monitor and adjust optical power safely, ensuring ESD precautions are followed. Cisco Meraki Switches: DOM metrics are available via the dashboard under Switching > Monitor > Switches > Ports.

Real-time Tx/

Rx power, temperature, and voltage can be monitored, but direct power adjustment may not be supported on all SFPs.

Best Practices

Monitor Optical Power: Always check Tx and Rx levels before and after adjustments to avoid signal degradation. Use Certified Modules: Non-certified modules may cause abnormal data bus behavior or damage interfaces. Follow Safety Guidelines: Avoid direct exposure to laser radiation and use ESD protection when handling modules.

Document Changes: Record any power adjustments for troubleshooting and network maintenance. By following these steps and using vendor-specific commands, you can safely configure and optimize optical power on your switch interfaces.
