Multimode Optical Cable Sensing Principle

Multimode optical cable sensing relies on the propagation of multiple light modes within a fiber, where changes in the environment affect interference patterns, intensity, or spectral characteristics, enabling detection of temperature, strain, displacement, and other physical parameters.

Core Principle

Multimode optical fibers (MMFs) have a relatively large core diameter, typically 50 µm, allowing multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. Each mode travels a slightly different path, and environmental changes such as temperature, strain, or pressure alter the phase, amplitude, or interference of these modes. This results in measurable variations in the output light, which can be analyzed to infer the physical changes along the fiber.

Multimode Interference (MMI) in SensingA key mechanism in MMF sensing is multimode interference (MMI). When light propagates through a multimode fiber, the superposition of modes produces self-imaging patterns along the fiber length. Any perturbation—like bending, stretching, or temperature variation—modifies these interference patterns.

By monitoring changes in intensity, spectral distribution, or speckle patterns, sensors can detect and quantify physical parameters.

Distributed Sensing Applications

Multimode fibers are widely used in Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems.

In DT

S, the fiber acts as a continuous sensor along its length, detecting temperature hotspots or thermal gradients by analyzing backscattered light signals. Multimode fibers with graded-index profiles provide high coupling efficiency and strong signal-to-noise ratios, making them suitable for real-time monitoring in pipelines, tunnels, and industrial facilities.

DA

S systems similarly detect vibrations or acoustic signals along the fiber, enabling intrusion detection or structural health monitoring.

Advantages of Multimode Fiber in Sensing

High optical power handling due to larger core size. Enhanced signal-to-noise ratio for distributed sensing. Compatibility with conventional light sources like LEDs or lasers.

Cost-effective deployment compared to single-mode fibers for short-range applications.

Recent Developments

Recent advances include machine learning-assisted MMF sensors, which analyze complex speckle patterns or spectral changes to improve sensitivity and reduce the need for specialized fiber structures. This approach allows MMF sensors to detect temperature, strain, displacement, refractive index, and chemical changes with higher accuracy and lower fabrication complexity.

Summary

In essence, multimode optical cable sensing exploits the interaction of multiple light modes with environmental perturbations. By monitoring changes in interference, intensity, or spectral characteristics, these fibers provide versatile, distributed, and high-resolution sensing capabilities for industrial, structural, and environmental applications.
