How to inflate a fiber optic cable junction box

Inflating a fiber optic junction box typically involves filling it with protective gel or using sealing methods to safeguard the fibers from moisture, dust, and mechanical stress.

Purpose of Inflating or Sealing

Fiber optic junction boxes protect the delicate spliced fibers inside from environmental hazards such as water seepage, dust, temperature extremes, and mechanical impact. Proper sealing ensures long-term reliability and signal integrity by preventing fiber damage and maintaining the IP68 protection level.

Methods of Sealing

Gel Filling: Many junction boxes use a gel compound that surrounds the fibers and splices. This gel acts as a cushion, prevents water ingress, and accommodates thermal expansion and contraction. Mechanical Seals: Some boxes use rubber gaskets or compression fittings to seal the cable entry points.

Tightening these fittings ensures a secure, dust- and water-resistant closure. Heat Shrink Tubing: For certain splice points, heat shrink sleeves can be applied over the fibers or connectors to provide additional protection and insulation. Ventilation Options: Some boxes include vent plugs to equalize pressure while maintaining waterproofing, especially in outdoor installations.

Installation Steps

Select the Location: Install the junction box in a dry, accessible area, avoiding direct sunlight or exposure to moisture. For aerial or tower installations, a height of 8–10 meters is recommended for protection and maintenance access. Prepare the Cable: Carefully strip the outer sheath of the fiber optic cable without damaging the fibers inside.

Ensure enough fiber length for splicing and routing within the box. Insert and Splice Fibers: Place the fibers into the designated trays or holders inside the box. Perform splicing according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Apply Gel or Seal: If using a gel-filled box, inject the gel around the fibers and splices until the box is fully protected. For mechanical or heat shrink seals, ensure all entry points are tightly closed. Close the Box: Secure the cover and tighten screws or clamps to maintain the seal.

Check that all connections are stable and that the box is fully sealed against environmental exposure. Test the Connection: Use a fiber optic test device to verify signal integrity and confirm that the installation is successful.

Maintenance Tips

Keep the box free of dust and debris. Avoid bending or crushing the fibers inside. Periodically check the seals and tighten any loose components.

Replace gel or sealing materials if they degrade over time. Properly inflating or sealing a fiber optic junction box ensures durable, high-performance fiber connections and protects the network from environmental damage, maintaining reliable high-speed communication.
