Optical Cable Laying and Traction Connection Methods

Optical fiber cables can be installed using aerial, underground, or indoor methods, with traction connection achieved via fixed-pulley systems, manual or mechanical pulling, and careful handling to prevent damage.

Aerial Cable Laying

Aerial optical cables are typically installed using two main methods: the fixed-pulley traction method and the cable tray moving and releasing method. In the fixed-pulley traction method, large pulleys are mounted on poles, and smaller guide pulleys are placed every 10–20 meters along the suspension line. The optical cable is connected to a traction rope, which can be pulled manually or mechanically.

Manual traction involves gradually tightening the rope while releasing the cable, often with personnel stationed at every two poles to assist and ensure safety. For long cable runs, the cable may be laid in two stages using a figure-8 pattern to prevent kinking and mechanical stress.

Underground Cable Laying

Underground installation involves trenching, conduit placement, and direct burial. The process begins with careful route planning, site surveys, and environmental assessments to avoid obstacles and ensure compliance with regulations. Cables are pulled through conduits or directly buried, maintaining proper bend radius and pulling tension to prevent fiber damage.

Pulleys or guide devices are used at bends and entry/exit points, and lubrication may be applied to reduce friction. Armored cables and water-blocking layers are often used to protect against environmental stress, rodents, and mechanical forces.

Indoor and Facade Installation

Indoor optical fiber installation requires routing through buildings using existing conduits or dedicated pathways. Careful planning avoids obstacles such as electrical wiring or plumbing. Facade installations may involve mounting cables along walls or structures, ensuring minimal mechanical stress and adherence to building codes.

LSZH-sheathed cables are sensitive to cracks and require careful handling during installation.

Traction Connection Methods

Traction connection ensures the cable is pulled safely without exceeding mechanical limits. Key methods include: Manual Traction: Personnel gradually pull the cable using ropes and pulleys, coordinating via communication devices to maintain tension and prevent fiber damage. Mechanical Traction: Machines or winches provide controlled pulling force, suitable for longer or heavier cable runs.

Guide Pulleys and Swivels: Used to maintain proper bend radius, prevent twisting, and reduce friction during pulling. Figure-8 Laying: For long cable sections, the cable is temporarily laid in a figure-8 pattern to prevent kinking and maintain structural integrity.

Best Practices

Always respect the minimum bend radius and maximum pulling tension specified by the manufacturer. Use protective elements such as splice boxes, distributors, and guide elements at designated locations. Maintain cleanliness and avoid sharp bends or twists during handling.

Implement safety measures, including signaling systems and environmental precautions. Supervise cable laying before, during, and after installation to ensure quality and reliability. By following these methods and precautions, optical fiber installations can achieve high performance, minimal signal loss, and long-term reliability across aerial, underground, and indoor environments.
