Data transmission mechanism of optical modules

Optical modules transmit data by converting electrical signals into optical signals for fiber transmission and then back into electrical signals at the receiving end.

Core Function

Optical modules operate at the physical layer of the OSI model, serving as the bridge between electrical circuits and optical fiber networks. Their primary function is optoelectronic conversion, enabling high-speed data transmission over long distances with minimal loss.

Key Components

Transmitter Optical Sub-

Assembly (TOSA): Converts incoming electrical signals into optical signals. It includes a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED), a driver circuit, and an optical interface. The driver chip modulates the light source according to the input electrical signal, producing a modulated optical signal.

Receiver Optical Sub-

Assembly (ROSA): Converts received optical signals back into electrical signals. It contains a photodetector diode and preamplifier circuits to ensure the output electrical signal matches the original data rate. Functional Circuits and Controller: Manage signal processing, automatic power control (APC), and digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) to maintain consistent optical output and monitor parameters like temperature, voltage, and optical power.

Housing and Interfaces: Protect internal components and provide electrical and optical connections. Common form factors include SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable), which are hot-swappable and widely used in data centers. Data Transmission ProcessElectrical-to-Optical Conversion: The input electrical signal is processed by the driver chip, which modulates the laser or LED in the TOSA to emit light pulses representing the data.

Optical Fiber Transmission: The modulated light travels through the optical fiber, carrying the data over long distances with low attenuation and high bandwidth.

Optical-to-

Electrical Conversion: At the receiving end, the ROSA detects the incoming light pulses and converts them back into electrical signals. The preamplifier ensures signal integrity before outputting the data to the connected device.

Performance and Monitoring

Modern optical modules integrate Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) to track real-time parameters such as transmitted and received optical power, laser bias current, and operating temperature. This ensures reliable operation and interoperability across network equipment.

Summary

In essence, optical modules act like a data courier, picking up electrical signals, converting them into light for transmission, and delivering them as electrical signals at the destination. Their efficiency, speed, and reliability make them essential for high-bandwidth applications in telecommunications, data centers, and 5G networks.
