Copper busbar cable tray models

Copper busbars are typically installed in busbar duct systems (busway) rather than conventional cable trays, using either sandwich (compact) or air-insulated enclosures.

Busbar Duct Systems

Copper busbars are usually mounted inside busbar ducts, also called busways or busbar trunking systems, which are prefabricated metal enclosures designed to safely carry high currents. Unlike standard cable trays, busbar ducts provide a rigid, enclosed pathway that protects the conductors and allows for modular installation. Sections are factory-assembled and connected on-site, simplifying installation and maintenance.

Common Types of Busbar Ducts

Sandwich (Compact) Busbar DuctConductors are sandwiched between layers of solid insulation with no air gaps. Most common for modern installations due to high current density and compact design.

Air-

Insulated (Open) Busbar DuctConductors are separated by air gaps within the housing. Older technology, still used in some industrial applications.

Plug-

In Busway

Sandwich busbar duct with tap-off windows for adding or moving units without de-energizing the main run. Rising Mains (Vertical Busway)Designed for vertical installation in multi-story buildings, with tap-off points on each floor.

Trolley Busway

Conductors are exposed on the underside, allowing mobile equipment to draw power via sliding contacts.

Advantages Over Conventional Cable Trays

Higher current capacity in a smaller footprint compared to multiple parallel cables. Enhanced safety due to fully enclosed conductors. Simplified installation with prefabricated sections bolted together.

Flexibility for future modifications with plug-in or modular designs.

Installation Considerations

Busbar ducts are rated for specific continuous currents (e.g., 400 A to 6,300 A) and voltages (typically 600–690 V AC),. Proper spacing, insulation, and short-circuit protection must be considered to maintain safety and performance. Unlike cable trays, busbar ducts are designed to handle mechanical and thermal stresses associated with high-current copper bars.

In summary, copper busbars are best supported using busbar duct systems rather than conventional cable trays, with sandwich (compact) and air-insulated types being the most common depending on current requirements and installation environment.
