Installing optical cables at the optical cable factory

Proper installation of optical fiber cables in a factory requires careful handling, adherence to bend radius and tensile limits, and systematic workflow planning to ensure cable integrity and performance.

Pre-

Installation Planning

Before installation, it is essential to plan the layout and workflow of the factory, including production areas, storage, and cable routing paths. Each section of the cable installation should be evaluated for splicing, connections, and protection requirements, and the necessary materials, machinery, and human resources should be allocated accordingly. Safety measures, environmental controls, and authorization from relevant authorities must be in place to ensure compliance and prevent accidents during installation.

Handling and Storage

Optical fiber cables are sensitive to mechanical stress. Cables should remain on reels with protective material until installation, and any temporary removal for inspection must be followed by reapplying the protection before storage or further handling. Avoid sharp bends, twisting, or excessive pulling, and maintain the minimum bend radius specified for each cable type.

LSZ

H sheathed cables are particularly sensitive to cracks and damage, especially at higher temperatures.

Installation Techniques

Pulling and Laying: Pull cables slowly and carefully, avoiding edges or obstacles that could damage the sheath. Use figure-8 loops when laying cable on surfaces to prevent twisting and kinking, with loop sizes typically between 2–4 meters depending on cable stiffness. Bending and Twisting: Ensure the cable is never bent below its minimum bend radius and avoid twisting or applying excessive force.

Splicing and Connections: Use proper splice protectors and leave sufficient cable reserves. Connections should be made with pigtails or direct connector mounting, and patch cords should be used to link distributors to equipment. Cleaning and Finishing: Remove debris, clean connectors, and securely fasten junction boxes and cable reserves to maintain a clean and organized installation.

Quality Control and Supervision

Supervision is critical before, during, and after installation. Inspect each cable section for compliance with bend radius, tensile limits, and mechanical stress. Ensure that all splices, connections, and protective elements are correctly installed and that the installation area is free from hazards that could damage the cable.

Proper documentation and work control help maintain the quality and reliability of the optical network.

Factory-

Specific Considerations

In a factory environment, the installation process should integrate with production lines, testing equipment, and cable assembly workflows. Equipment such as fiber drawing machines, extrusion lines, and curing ovens must be arranged logically to support efficient cable handling and minimize unnecessary movement or stress on the fibers. Training the workforce on standardized procedures and proper handling techniques is essential for maintaining high-quality output.

By following these guidelines, optical fiber cables can be installed safely and efficiently in a factory setting, ensuring long-term performance, minimal attenuation, and reliable connectivity.
