Optical Splitter Industry Standard

Optical splitters in the industry follow standards for split ratios, architectures, and PON compatibility, with FBT and PLC technologies dominating FTTH deployments.

Overview of Optical Splitters

Optical splitters are passive devices that divide a single optical signal into multiple outputs, enabling cost-efficient point-to-multipoint communication in fiber networks such as FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) and FTTx systems. They are essential in Passive Optical Networks (PONs), allowing a single Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to serve multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) without requiring dedicated fibers for each subscriber.

Industry Standard Types

Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) SplittersTraditional and widely used for small split ratios (e.g., 1: 2, 1: 4, 2: 2). Low-cost and suitable for simple network deployments. Performance can vary with wavelength and environmental conditions.

Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) SplittersPreferred for large split ratios (e.g., 1: 32, 1: 64). Fabricated using lithography on silica glass substrates, providing uniform, precise, and low-loss splits. Highly scalable and suitable for modern GPON, XGS-PON, and 25/50G PON networks.

Split Ratios and Architectures

Split Ratios define how the optical power is divided among outputs. Common ratios include 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8, 1: 16, 1: 32, and 1: 64. Balanced (2xN) Splitters have two input fibers and N output fibers, often used for redundancy.

Splitting Architectures include cascaded splitters for flexible network design, allowing operators to balance bandwidth, cost, and scalability.

Compliance and Standards

Optical splitters are designed to comply with ITU-T PON standards, including GPON, XGS-PON, and emerging 25/50G PON. Industry-standard splitters, such as Clearfield's WaveSmart, incorporate features for fiber protection, management, and easy installation, ensuring consistent performance in FTTx deployments. Both bare and connectorized splitters are available for inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) applications, supporting modular network architectures.

Key Considerations

Passive Operation: No power required, reducing operational costs. Scalability: Adding subscribers only requires connecting additional ONTs to existing splitter outputs. Uniformity and Loss: PLC splitters provide better uniformity and lower insertion loss compared to FBT, especially for high split ratios.

Environmental Stability: PLC splitters are less sensitive to temperature and wavelength variations than FBT splitters. In summary, the industry standard for optical splitters emphasizes PLC technology for large-scale deployments, adherence to ITU-T PON standards, and modular designs that support efficient, scalable, and reliable FTTH networks.

FB

T splitters remain relevant for smaller, cost-sensitive applications, while modern networks increasingly rely on PLC splitters for uniformity and high-capacity distribution.
