What type of plastic is used in optical fiber cables

Plastic optical fiber cables typically use PMMA (acrylic) for the core, fluorinated polymers for the cladding, and acrylate coatings for protection.

Core Material

The central part of a plastic optical fiber, known as the core, is usually made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, acrylic).

PMM

A comprises about 96% of the fiber cross-section in standard 1 mm diameter fibers and is chosen for its transparency, flexibility, and ability to transmit light efficiently over short distances. High-performance fibers may also use perfluorinated polymers such as CYTOP for improved transmission and lower attenuation.

Cladding Material

Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a lower refractive index to ensure total internal reflection. In plastic optical fibers, the cladding is typically made from fluorinated polymers. These materials provide a high refractive index difference between the core and cladding, enhancing light guidance while maintaining flexibility and mechanical robustness.

Protective Coatings

To protect the fiber from mechanical damage, acrylate polymers or polyimide coatings are applied over the cladding. These coatings do not affect the optical properties but provide durability, resistance to environmental stress, and ease of handling during installation. Dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coatings are common, with a soft primary layer for flexibility and a hard secondary layer for mechanical protection.

Applications

Plastic optical fibers are generally used for short-distance, low-speed applications, such as home networks, industrial networks, and automotive systems, due to their flexibility and ease of installation. High-performance perfluorinated polymer fibers are suitable for higher-speed applications like data centers and building LAN wiring. In summary, PMMA or perfluorinated polymers form the core, fluorinated polymers form the cladding, and acrylate coatings provide protection, making plastic optical fibers flexible, robust, and suitable for consumer and industrial applications.

The buffer or jacket on patch cords is often color-coded to indicate the type of fiber used. The strain relief boot that protects the fiber from bending at a connector is color-coded to indicate the type of connection. Connectors with a plastic shell (such as SC connectors) typically use a color-coded shell. Standard color codings for jackets (or buffers) and boots (or connector shells) are shown below: Remark: It is also possible that a small part of a connector is additionally color-coded, e.g., the lever o
