What cables are routed through electrical cable trays

Cable trays are used to route power, control, instrumentation, and communication cables, including tray-rated cables such as TC, TC-ER, and ITC.

Overview of Cable Tray Usage

Cable trays provide a structured pathway to support and organize insulated electrical cables for power distribution, control, instrumentation, and communication in commercial and industrial settings. Unlike conduit systems, cable trays allow cables to be laid in bundles, improving accessibility, heat dissipation, and scalability. They are particularly useful where wiring changes are anticipated, as new cables can be added without dismantling the system.

Common Types of Cables in Cable Trays

Type T

C – Tray CableFactory-assembled with two or more insulated conductors, optionally including grounding conductors, under a non-metallic jacket. Rated for 600 volts, suitable for industrial power or control circuits. Can be installed in cable trays, raceways, and outdoor locations with support.

T

C cables are UL-listed for hazardous locations (Class 1, Division 2) and may be used for direct burial if specified. TC-ER (Exposure Rated) cables can leave the tray for up to six feet if supported and secured.

Type IT

C – Instrumentation Tray CableUsed for instrumentation and control signals, available in shielded or unshielded constructions. Can consist of multiple single conductors or twisted pairs, with or without metal armor. Designed to minimize electrical noise and interference in sensitive control systems.

Other Tray-

Rated CablesMetal-Clad (MC) cables may also be used for certain power applications. Cables can be rated for indoor, outdoor, corrosive, hazardous, or high electrical noise environments. UL-listed cables are tested for flammability, mechanical resistance, and temperature limitations.

Installation Considerations

Cables must be supported and secured at intervals, typically not exceeding six feet for TC-ER cables. Cable trays come in various designs (ladder, trough, solid-bottom, ventilated) to balance protection, ventilation, and accessibility. Proper selection of cable type and tray configuration ensures compliance with NEC Section 392 and other relevant standards, addressing fill capacity, ampacity, splicing, and physical protection.

Summary

Electrical cable trays are versatile systems that route power, control, instrumentation, and communication cables, primarily using tray-rated cables such as TC, TC-ER, and ITC. These cables are designed to withstand mechanical stress, environmental exposure, and electrical interference, while the tray system provides organized support, heat dissipation, and easy access for maintenance and future expansion.
