How to reduce light attenuation using an optical power meter

To set light attenuation on an optical power meter, you configure a reference power and switch to relative (dB) mode to measure insertion loss or signal attenuation.

Step-by-

Step Guide1. Power On and Prepare the Meter Turn on the optical power meter and allow it to initialize. Ensure the auto-off function is disabled if continuous measurement is needed.

2. Set the Measurement Wavelength Select the wavelength that matches the optical signal you are testing (e.g., 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm). Accurate wavelength selection ensures the sensor responds correctly and complies with IEC 61300 standards.

3.

Set the Reference Power

Connect a fiber or light source with known power to the meter.

Press the RE

F key to set the current optical power as the reference. This establishes a baseline for relative measurements. 4.

Switch to Relative Power Mode (dB)After setting the reference, switch the meter to dB mode. This allows the meter to display attenuation or insertion loss relative to the reference power. The meter will now show the difference between the reference power and the measured power, which represents the light attenuation.

5. Connect the Fiber Under Test Attach the fiber or device whose loss you want to measure. The meter will display the attenuation in dB, reflecting the signal loss due to fiber, connectors, or splices.

6. Optional: Absolute Power Measurement If needed, you can switch back to dBm mode to measure the absolute optical power of the signal. This is useful for verifying transmitter or receiver output levels.

7.

Record and Interpret Results

A higher dB value indicates greater attenuation. Use the readings to assess fiber quality, connector performance, or system losses.

Tips for Accurate Attenuation Measurement

Ensure all connectors are clean and properly seated to avoid extrinsic losses. Use launch cables and adapters consistent with your test setup. For multimode fibers, use 850/1300nm LEDs; for single-mode fibers, use 1310/1550nm lasers.

Consider using single-ended or double-ended loss measurement methods depending on whether you want to measure individual connectors or the entire fiber link. By following these steps, you can accurately set and measure light attenuation on an optical power meter, ensuring reliable fiber optic testing and diagnostics.
