Specifications of Silicon Core Tubes for Optical Cables

Optical cables in silicon core tubes must be installed with controlled bending, proper tension, protective measures, and careful handling to prevent damage and ensure long-term performance.

Core Installation Guidelines

Bending Radius: The optical fiber should maintain a minimum bending radius of 15 times the outer diameter of the fiber during normal operation and 20 times during installation to prevent microbending or breakage. Cable Handling: The fiber reel rotation must be synchronized with the laying speed, typically around 15 meters per minute, to avoid twisting or tension stress. Loose radian should be maintained at the outlet of the fiber, and a buffer margin should be reserved to prevent back buckling.

End Length and Labeling: Reserve 5–10 meters of fiber at both ends for splicing and termination. All fibers should be labeled, and detailed laying records should be maintained.

Protective Measures

Sheath Protection: Keep protective material on the cable until installation.

For LSZ

H or sensitive sheaths, avoid mechanical stress, sharp edges, and high temperatures during installation. Environmental Considerations: Ensure the installation area is free from sharp rocks or objects that could damage the cable. Minimize mechanical pressure at crossing points, especially for armored cables.

Storage: Store reels on flat, firm surfaces, away from flooding or uneven terrain. Reels should be secured to prevent movement.

Installation Planning

Route Planning: Evaluate each section of the cable route, including splicing points, segregation, and protection elements like splice boxes or distributors. Redundancy and Core Selection: Determine the number of fiber cores based on network requirements, including primary use, backup, and redundancy. For example, a typical horizontal wiring setup may use six cores per floor: two for use, two for backup, and two for redundancy.

Supervision and Authorization: All tasks should be supervised, and work should only proceed with proper authorization from relevant authorities.

Best Practices

Avoid sharp turns, kinks, and pulling over edges. Use figure-8 loops when laying fiber on surfaces to prevent twisting. Protect cables from prolonged exposure to sunlight or extreme temperatures.

Conduct pilot tests and ensure staff are trained in handling and installation procedures. Following these requirements ensures mechanical integrity, signal quality, and long-term reliability of optical cables installed through silicon core tubes.
