Distribution Box Commissioning Scheme

A distribution box commissioning scheme involves systematic inspection, testing, and validation of all components, connections, and protection systems to ensure safe and reliable operation before energization.

Pre-

Commissioning Checks

Before energizing a distribution box, perform a visual inspection to verify that all components such as circuit breakers, fuses, switches, and lightning arrestors are correctly installed, undamaged, and properly grounded. Ensure that all lugs and cable terminations are securely crimped and that the correct cable sizes are used for the LV and HV sides. Confirm that the distribution box is installed according to the utility-approved drawings.

Insulation and Continuity Testing

Measure insulation resistance (IR) between HV to LV, LV to earth, and HV to earth using a 1000 V Megger unit. Check continuity of all protective earth connections, ensuring that the neutral bushing and transformer body are earthed with at least two separate electrodes connected to form an earth bus, with resistance not exceeding 2. 5 ohms.

Verify that all CTs, VTs, and protection relays are correctly connected and grounded.

Protection and Functional Testing

Circuit Breakers and Switches: Test open/close operations and contact resistance to ensure proper functioning. Current Transformers (CTs) and Voltage Transformers (VTs): Verify ratio, polarity, knee point voltage, and perform tan-delta tests.

Check C

T core allocation to relays, meters, and multifunction devices. Fuses and Lightning Arrestors: Confirm correct installation and alignment with drawings. Phase Sequence and Motor Direction: Apply a test load (e.g., a 3-phase motor) to verify correct phase sequence and rotation.

Energization and Load Testing

Once pre-commissioning tests are complete, gradually energize the distribution box and monitor for abnormal conditions. Apply a test load to ensure proper operation under normal conditions, checking for correct voltage levels, current flow, and protection system response. Document all test results for future reference and maintenance comparison.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain a commissioning report detailing all inspections, test results, and corrective actions taken. This ensures traceability and compliance with safety and operational standards. The report should include IR values, CT/VT test results, earthing resistance, and functional verification of all protection devices.

Safety Considerations

Always follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure personnel are trained in high-voltage safety practices. Confirm that all equipment is de-energized during testing and that proper PPE is used. By following this structured commissioning scheme, a distribution box can be safely and reliably brought into service, minimizing the risk of faults, equipment damage, or operational hazards.
