Fiber optic sensor detects white

Fiber optic sensors detect white objects by measuring the high reflectivity of white surfaces, which reflects more light back to the sensor compared to darker materials.

How Fiber Optic Sensors Detect White

Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a target object and measuring the reflected light intensity. White surfaces reflect a large portion of the incident light, producing a strong signal at the sensor receiver, whereas darker surfaces absorb more light and reflect less. By comparing the reflected intensity to a set threshold, the sensor can reliably identify white objects.

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors for White Detection

Reflective Sensors: These sensors emit light toward the object and detect the light reflected back. They are ideal for detecting white surfaces because the high reflectivity produces a clear signal.

Through-

Beam Sensors: These sensors have separate emitter and receiver units. The object interrupts the light beam, and the sensor detects the change. While effective for object presence, they are less dependent on color reflectivity.

Light Wavelength Considerations

The choice of light wavelength affects detection accuracy: Red LEDs (around 633 nm) are commonly used for white objects because they provide stable detection even with highly reflective surfaces.

Blue LE

Ds (around 455 nm) are better for glossy or dark surfaces but are less critical for white detection. Infrared light can be used to avoid visual distractions and is suitable for automated systems where human visibility is not required.

Practical Tips

Threshold Setting: Use the sensor's teach-in or potentiometer function to set a threshold that distinguishes white from other colors. Surface Finish: Matte white surfaces reflect light differently than glossy white surfaces, so calibration may be needed. Environmental Factors: Fiber optic sensors are resistant to harsh conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and dust, making them reliable for industrial applications.

By leveraging the high reflectivity of white materials and selecting appropriate sensor types and wavelengths, fiber optic sensors can accurately detect white objects in automated and industrial environments.
