Materials for Optical Cable Lines

Fiber optic cables are primarily made of ultra-pure silica for the core and cladding, protective polymer coatings, strength members, and outer jackets, with additional materials for water resistance, fire safety, and mechanical protection.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the fiber where light signals travel. It is typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium to control the refractive index, ensuring efficient light transmission over long distances. Surrounding the core is the cladding, made from glass or plastic with a slightly lower refractive index than the core, which reflects light back into the core to prevent signal loss.

Additives like boron or chlorine can adjust the refractive index, while germanium increases it.

Coatings and Buffer Layers

To protect the delicate glass fibers, dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coatings are applied: a soft primary coating cushions the fiber, and a hard secondary coating provides mechanical protection. In ribbon cables, a UV-curable resin forms the ribbon matrix. Buffer tubes and water-blocking elements prevent moisture ingress and maintain fiber stability during installation and operation.

Strength Members

Fiber optic cables include strength members to resist tensile stress and bending. Common materials include aramid yarns (Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP), or steel wires, depending on whether the cable is aerial, underground, or microduct-installed. These elements ensure the fiber maintains optical performance under mechanical strain.

Outer Jacket and Protective Layers

The outer jacket shields the cable from environmental hazards such as UV radiation, temperature extremes, and physical damage. Materials used include polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or flame-retardant compounds for fire safety. Some cables incorporate metallic components for grounding or chemical protection in specialized applications.

Additional Functional Materials

Fiber optic cables may include color inks for fiber identification, glass flakes, borates, or chemical repellents for enhanced durability, and ripcords or messenger wires for easier installation. Bend-insensitive fibers and microcable sheaths are designed for specific installation methods like blowing in microducts or aerial deployment.

Summary

In essence, a fiber optic cable is a complex assembly of materials designed to transmit light efficiently while withstanding mechanical, thermal, and environmental stresses. The combination of high-purity silica, protective coatings, strength members, and outer jackets ensures long-term performance and reliability across diverse applications.
