Fiber Optic Sensing Layer

The fiber optic sensing layer is the functional part of an optical fiber that interacts with environmental or physical changes, modulating light to enable precise measurement of parameters like strain, temperature, pressure, or chemical composition. Overview of the Sensing LayerIn a fiber optic sensor, the sensing layer can be intrinsic or extrinsic. In intrinsic sensors, the optical fiber itself acts as the sensing element, where changes in the environment directly alter the light traveling through the fiber.

In extrinsic sensors, the fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element, allowing measurements in remote or harsh locations without electrical interference. The sensing layer is typically designed to respond to specific physical or chemical stimuli. For example, strain or pressure can change the fiber's refractive index or induce microbending, while temperature variations can affect scattering properties such as Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering.

Special fibers, like fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), incorporate periodic refractive index variations in the core, which reflect specific wavelengths of light. Changes in strain or temperature shift the reflected wavelength, providing high-resolution measurements.

Working Principle

The sensing layer modulates light in terms of intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time. Light emitted from a source travels through the fiber, interacts with the sensing layer, and is detected at the other end. The detected signal is then analyzed to quantify the measured parameter.

Distributed sensing can be achieved by analyzing scattering along the entire fiber length, enabling continuous monitoring over kilometers.

Applications

Fiber optic sensing layers are widely used in structural health monitoring, aerospace, energy, and biomedical fields. NASA's Fiber Optic Sensing System (FOSS) uses hair-thin fibers to measure strain, deformation, temperature, and liquid levels in aircraft and spacecraft, processing thousands of data points along a single fiber. In civil engineering, FBG-based sensors monitor bridges and buildings for stress and vibration.

In energy systems, they detect temperature and pressure in batteries or pipelines, while in biomedical applications, they can measure physiological parameters without electrical interference.

Advantages

The fiber optic sensing layer offers high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, and the ability to perform distributed sensing. It can operate in extreme environments, including high voltage, high temperature, or chemically aggressive conditions, where traditional electronic sensors may fail. In summary, the fiber optic sensing layer is the core functional component that converts environmental changes into measurable optical signals, enabling precise, distributed, and robust sensing across diverse industries.
