Splitting ratio of the beam splitter

The splitting ratio of a beam splitter indicates the proportion of incident light that is transmitted versus reflected by the device.

Definition and Meaning

The splitting ratio specifies how a beam splitter divides an incoming light beam into two separate beams: one transmitted and one reflected. For example, a 50/50 splitting ratio means that half of the incident light is transmitted and half is reflected, while a 70/30 ratio would transmit 70% of the light and reflect 30%. This ratio is determined by the design and coating of the beam splitter, such as a partially reflective coating on a cube or plate surface.

Types of Beam Splitters and RatiosNon-polarizing beam splitters: Designed to maintain the polarization of the incident light while splitting it at a specific ratio, commonly 50/50. Polarizing beam splitters: Separate light based on polarization, often producing ratios like 95/5 for s- and p-polarized light. Cube vs Plate: Cube beam splitters are made from two glued prisms with a coated hypotenuse, while plate beam splitters are thin coated glass plates.

Both types can be designed for specific splitting ratios.

Adjustable Splitting Ratios

Some beam splitters allow variable splitting ratios, achieved by rotating a half-wave plate in combination with a polarizing splitter or using a gradient coating on a rotating disk. This enables continuous tuning of the transmitted and reflected power.

Applications

The splitting ratio is critical in interferometers, laser systems, optical monitoring, and imaging setups, where precise control of light distribution is required. Choosing the correct ratio ensures optimal performance for measurement accuracy, signal strength, or polarization control. In summary, the splitting ratio defines how the input light is divided between the output beams, and it is a key parameter in designing and selecting beam splitters for optical systems.

While most beam splitters have a fixed splitting ratio, variable beam splitters allow for the continuous adjustment of the ratio between reflected and transmitted power.

What are Beamsplitters?

Polarizing beamsplitters are designed to split light into reflected S-polarized and transmitted P-polarized beams. They can be used to split unpolarized light at a 50/50 ratio, or for polarization separation
