Optical cables use reinforcement structures such as aramid yarns, fiberglass rods, and armored layers to protect fibers from tensile, compressive, and environmental stresses.

Core Reinforcement

The cable core houses the optical fibers and is the primary area requiring mechanical protection. Reinforcement can be implemented in two main ways: centrally or peripherally. In the central strengthening core method, a rigid or semi-rigid element like a fiberglass rod or aramid fiber bundle is placed at the center of the cable, providing a backbone that bears tensile loads during installation and operation.

This method is common in layer-stranded and skeleton-type cables, especially in Europe and Japan. Peripheral reinforcement involves placing strength members around the outer sheath of the cable, a method often used in the United States.

Materials for Reinforcement

Aramid Yarn (Kevlar®): Lightweight, high tensile strength (up to 400 Kpsi), and non-stretchable, aramid yarns prevent fiber elongation and sagging in aerial spans. They resist creep deformation and provide strain relief by breaking before the fibers are damaged. Fiberglass Rods: Corrosion-resistant and thermally stable from -60° to +80°C, fiberglass rods offer high tensile strength (up to 10,000 psi) and fatigue resistance.

They are often used as central members in loose tube cables. Steel Wires or Armor: For direct burial or harsh environments, steel tape or wire armor provides additional tensile strength and protection against mechanical damage, rodents, or crushing forces. Multi-piece armor layers can completely surround the core elements for maximum protection.

Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) and Aramid-Reinforced Plastic (KFRP): Advanced non-metallic cores combine aramid fibers with thermoset or thermoplastic resins, offering high tensile strength, lighter weight, smaller bend radius, and anti-fracture properties compared to traditional glass fiber reinforced cores.

Structural Design Considerations

Loose Tube and Central Tube Designs: Fibers are placed with extra length inside loose tubes to prevent elongation under tension. The central tube may be reinforced with glass yarns or FRP rods for additional tensile and compression resistance.

Multi-

Piece Reinforcement Layers: Some cables use overlapping reinforcement sheets or armor segments to fully encase the optical fibers, ensuring uniform load distribution and protection against bending or crushing. Strain Relief and Water Blocking: Reinforcement structures are often combined with filling compounds, water-swellable materials, or hot-melt coatings to prevent water ingress and improve load transmission to the sheath.

Summary

The reinforcement structure of an optical cable is critical for maintaining fiber integrity under mechanical stress. Aramid yarns, fiberglass rods, steel armor, and FRP cores are strategically placed either centrally or peripherally to provide tensile strength, strain relief, and environmental protection. The choice of material and arrangement depends on installation type, environmental conditions, and whether a metal-free or armored design is required.
