Earliest Optical Cable Technology

The earliest optical cable technology traces back to the 19th century experiments with light guidance and the optical telegraph of the late 18th century.

Early Optical Communication

The first practical optical communication system was the optical telegraph, invented by Claude Chappe in 1790. This system used a series of towers with movable semaphore arms to transmit messages visually over long distances. The first line, between Paris and Lille in 1794, spanned 193 km with 22 stations, allowing information to travel at 2–3 words per minute, a significant improvement over physical message transport.

The optical telegraph remained in use for over 60 years until electric telegraph systems emerged in the 1850s.

Total Internal Reflection Experiments

The principle underlying modern optical fibers, total internal reflection, was first demonstrated in 1841 by Swiss physicist Daniel Colladon. He directed light from an arc lamp into a stream of water and observed that the light could follow a curved path with minimal loss, showing that light could be guided through a medium using successive reflections. This experiment laid the groundwork for guiding light through fibers.

Early Glass Fiber Development

In the mid-20th century, researchers began experimenting with glass fibers. Early fibers used plastic cladding, which degraded over time and limited light transmission. Innovations by Curtiss involved creating a glass-clad fiber with a high-refractive-index core and lower-index cladding, enabling total internal reflection within the fiber core.

Initial losses were extremely high (around 1000 dB/km), but improvements reduced attenuation to below 20 dB/km, paving the way for practical optical communication.

Transition to Practical Fiber Optics

The first low-loss optical fibers suitable for communication were developed in 1970 by Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, and Peter Schultz at Corning Glass Works. Using ultra-pure fused silica, they achieved attenuation rates of 20 dB/km, a breakthrough that made fiber optic communication commercially viable. This innovation marked the beginning of modern optical cable technology, leading to single-mode fibers and long-distance communication systems.

Summary

The earliest optical cable technology evolved from visual telegraphs in the 18th century to guided light experiments in the 19th century, culminating in glass fiber development in the 20th century. Key milestones include the optical telegraph, total internal reflection experiments, and the creation of low-loss glass fibers, which collectively laid the foundation for today's high-speed fiber optic networks.
