Egypt receives fiber optic cable

Egypt has recently expanded its international fiber optic network through multiple submarine cables, enhancing connectivity between Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Key Submarine Cable ProjectsSEA-ME-WE-6 Cable Egypt successfully landed the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) submarine cable at Port Said and Ras Ghareb, connecting the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments via two complementary land routes. This high-capacity, low-latency cable links Singapore to France through 17 landing points, providing improved internet resilience, optimized traffic management, and meeting growing international bandwidth demand.

Telecom Egypt partnered with SubCom and 15 other global telecom companies, including Microsoft, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, and Orange. Africa-1 Cable Telecom Egypt also strengthened its network with the Africa-1 submarine system, landing at Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea and planning a second landing on the Mediterranean coast. This cable connects Pakistan to France with landings in multiple countries, including Kenya, Djibouti, Yemen, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria.

Africa-1 features eight fiber pairs, providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity for bandwidth-intensive applications such as AI and digital services, while supporting Egypt's ambition to become a regional digital hub. 4iG Europe-Egypt Cable The Hungarian company 4iG built a 2,800 km submarine fiber optic cable linking Egypt to Europe, aiming to provide high-speed internet access to six million additional Egyptian households. This project also establishes a direct connection to Albania, creating a new international traffic entrance to Europe and connecting major European communication points like Budapest, Vienna, and Frankfurt.

Strategic ImportanceEgypt's geographic position at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe makes it a critical hub for global internet traffic, with approximately 17% of worldwide internet traffic passing through its subsea cables. The country's cable infrastructure supports not only international communications but also the growth of its digital economy, IT services, and innovation sectors. Recent disruptions in the Red Sea have highlighted the vulnerability of this chokepoint, emphasizing the need for multiple redundant routes and robust infrastructure.

Implications

These projects collectively enhance Egypt's role as a regional connectivity hub, improve internet speed and reliability, and expand access to underserved areas. They also strengthen Egypt's strategic position in global telecommunications, supporting both economic growth and international digital partnerships.
