How to turn a cable tray into a shelf

You can convert a cable tray into a functional shelf by securely mounting it with brackets, reinforcing it if needed, and using zip ties or screws to stabilize items.

Materials Needed

Plan and Measure Decide where you want the shelf and measure the space. Consider the tray's length, width, and the weight of items you plan to store.

Sketch a rough layout to visualize placement and ensure accessibility. 2. Prepare the Tray If the tray has open sides or gaps, you can add a thin wooden plank or metal sheet to create a flat surface.

This prevents smaller items from falling through. 3. Mount Brackets Attach sturdy brackets to the wall or underside of a desk.

Space them evenly along the tray's length, typically 10–12 inches from each end and additional brackets in the middle for longer trays. Use a level to ensure the shelf will be straight. 4.

Secure the Tray Place the cable tray on the brackets. Use screws or zip ties to fasten the tray to the brackets, preventing side-to-side or up-and-down movement. For metal trays, small clamps or U-bolts can add extra stability.

5. Optional Reinforcement For heavier items, add cross braces or a wooden base inside the tray to distribute weight evenly. This is especially useful if the tray is plastic or thin metal.

6. Organize Items Once mounted, you can use the tray to store books, office supplies, or decorative items. Zip ties or small dividers can help keep items in place and prevent sliding.

Tips

If the tray has sharp edges, file or cover them to avoid injury. Paint or decorate the tray to match your room's aesthetic. Ensure the mounting surface can support the combined weight of the tray and stored items.

For under-desk shelves, leave enough clearance for knees and chair movement. By following these steps, a cable tray can be transformed into a practical, space-saving shelf while maintaining a clean, organized look.
