Two Important Parameters of Optical Transmitters

The two most important parameters of optical transmitters are optical output power and extinction ratio, as they directly impact signal quality and transmission reliability.

Optical Output Power

Optical output power refers to the amount of light emitted by the transmitter into the optical fiber, typically measured in dBm. This parameter is crucial because it determines how far the signal can travel before it becomes too weak to be detected reliably by the receiver. A transmitter with insufficient output power may result in signal loss, increased bit error rate (BER), and the need for additional amplification along the fiber link.

Conversely, excessive power can saturate the receiver and degrade signal quality, so it must be carefully matched to the receiver's sensitivity and the link's power budget.

Extinction Ratio

Extinction ratio (ER) is the ratio of the optical power level representing a logical '1' to that representing a logical '0'. A higher extinction ratio improves the distinction between binary states, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reducing the likelihood of errors during transmission. Low extinction ratios can lead to poor signal quality, especially over long distances or in systems with multiple amplifiers, as the receiver may struggle to differentiate between '1' and '0' bits.

Additional Considerations

While optical output power and extinction ratio are the primary parameters, other factors such as modulation format, wavelength stability, and transmitter linearity also influence performance. Together, these parameters ensure that the optical transmitter can deliver high-speed data reliably over the intended fiber link, maintaining low BER and optimal system performance. In summary, optical output power ensures the signal reaches the receiver with sufficient strength, and extinction ratio ensures the signal is clearly distinguishable, making these two parameters fundamental for the design and operation of optical communication systems.
