Optical Module CPO Switch

A CPO switch optical module integrates optical components directly with a switch ASIC, dramatically improving bandwidth, reducing power consumption, and minimizing latency. What is a CPO Optical Module?

A CP

O (Co-Packaged Optics) optical module is a technology where optical components—such as lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and transimpedance amplifiers—are integrated directly with the switch ASIC on the same substrate or interposer. Unlike traditional pluggable optical transceivers, which connect to switches via long high-speed electrical channels, CPO modules shorten the electrical path from centimeters to millimeters, significantly improving signal integrity and reducing insertion loss.

How It Works

In a CPO switch, the optical module and the switch ASIC are co-located, often using silicon photonics (SiPh) and advanced packaging techniques like 2. 5D or 3D integration. The optical engine can be placed on a silicon interposer or an organic substrate alongside the ASIC, enabling millimeter-level electrical connections.

This integration reduces the need for long PCB traces and external connectors, which are common sources of power loss and signal degradation in traditional architectures.

Benefits

Power Efficiency: Shorter electrical paths reduce energy loss, cutting power consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional pluggable optics. Higher Bandwidth: Direct integration with the ASIC allows for higher data rates, supporting 400G, 800G, and even 1. 6T Ethernet or InfiniBand links.

Lower Latency: Reduced signal travel distance improves latency, which is critical for AI workloads and high-performance computing. Scalability: CPO modules enable higher port density and more efficient use of front-panel space, allowing data centers to scale bandwidth without increasing physical footprint. Improved Signal Integrity: Millimeter-level connections reduce the risk of signal degradation, enhancing reliability and performance.

Challenges

Thermal Management: Co-locating high-power electronic and optical components generates heat, requiring advanced cooling solutions. Manufacturing Complexity: Integrating photonics and electronics at the chip level is more complex than traditional pluggable modules. Serviceability: Unlike hot-swappable pluggable optics, CPO modules are tightly integrated, making replacement or upgrades more challenging.

ApplicationsCPO optical modules are increasingly adopted in data centers, cloud infrastructure, and HPC environments, particularly where AI and machine learning workloads demand high bandwidth and low latency. Companies like NVIDIA are deploying CPO switches with silicon photonics to achieve higher power efficiency and network resiliency for large-scale GPU clusters. In summary, CPO switch optical modules represent a next-generation approach to data center networking, combining optical and electronic components in a single package to deliver superior performance, efficiency, and scalability compared to traditional pluggable optical transceivers.
