Distance requirements for distribution boxes in power distribution rooms

Minimum clearances for electrical equipment require at least 3 feet in front, 30 inches on the sides, and 6. 5 feet in height, with dedicated space extending from the floor to 6 feet above the equipment.

Working Space Requirements

Electrical equipment such as panelboards, switchboards, and distribution boxes must have adequate working space to allow safe operation, maintenance, and emergency access.

According to NE

C 110. 26 and OSHA 1910. 303, the minimum clearances are: Front clearance: At least 3 feet (36 inches) in front of the equipment to allow doors to open fully and provide safe access for personnel.

Side clearance: Minimum 30 inches from the sides of the equipment, or at least the width of the equipment itself, to ensure safe side access. Height clearance: Minimum 6. 5 feet (≈2 meters) or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater, to allow safe headroom.

These clearances are essential to prevent personnel from being trapped or exposed to live parts during maintenance or emergencies.

Dedicated Space

A dedicated space must be maintained around electrical equipment to protect it from physical damage and to ensure accessibility: The dedicated space should match the width and depth of the equipment. It must extend from the floor to 6 feet above the equipment or to the structural ceiling, whichever is lower. No other equipment, piping, or storage should occupy this space unless it is physically separated or protected from accidental contact.

High-

Voltage and Special ConditionsFor equipment rated over 1,000 volts, the required front clearance may increase depending on the voltage and the presence of live parts on opposing sides: Condition 1: Exposed live parts on one side, grounded parts on the other – clearance ranges from 3 to 8 feet depending on voltage. Condition 2: Exposed live parts on one side, grounded wall on the other – clearance ranges from 4 to 10 feet. Condition 3: Exposed live parts on both sides – additional clearance is required to ensure safety.

Protection from Physical DamageIn areas with forklifts, stacked materials, or pedestrian traffic, distribution boxes and disconnects must be protected by barriers or enclosures if the distance alone does not prevent accidental contact.

OSH

A requires that live parts operating at 50 volts or more be guarded against accidental contact using approved cabinets or enclosures.

Practical Recommendations

Maintain a clear path of travel in electrical rooms; do not use the space for storage. Ensure panel doors can open 90° without obstruction. For large switchboards or equipment over 1,200 amps, consider additional exits or doubling front clearance to prevent personnel from being trapped.

Verify that all clearances comply with NEC 110. 26 and OSHA 1910. 303 for your specific voltage and installation conditions.

By following these guidelines, power distribution rooms and distribution boxes will meet safety standards, allow proper maintenance, and reduce the risk of electrical hazards.
