Optical Module Structure Scheme

An optical module consists of a housing, optoelectronic assemblies (TOSA and ROSA), and a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) that together convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa. Core Components1. Housing: The external housing protects the internal components from physical damage and environmental contamination.

Common housing types include 1*9 and SFP form factors, which also provide mechanical support and alignment for fiber connections. 2.

Transmitter Optical Sub-

Assembly (TOSA): The TOSA is responsible for converting electrical signals into optical signals. Its main components include: Light Source: Typically a laser diode (LD) or, for low-speed applications, a light-emitting diode (LED).

L

Ds are preferred for high-speed, long-distance transmission due to higher output power, lower energy consumption, and better coupling efficiency. Optical Interface: Couples the emitted light into the optical fiber. Monitoring Photodiode: Measures output power to maintain consistent optical signal strength.

Driver Circuits: Process the input electrical signal and modulate the light source. Temperature Control Components: Thermistors, thermoelectric coolers, and automatic power/temperature control circuits ensure stable operation. 3.

Receiver Optical Sub-

Assembly (ROSA): The ROSA converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. Key elements include: Photodetector: Either a PIN photodiode or an avalanche photodiode (APD).

AP

Ds provide higher sensitivity through avalanche multiplication. Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA): Converts the weak photocurrent into a voltage signal. Post Amplifier: Normalizes signal amplitude for digital processing.

4. Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA): The PCBA integrates the driver circuits, limiting amplifiers, and central controller. It manages signal processing, data rate adaptation, and digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) for parameters like optical power, temperature, and voltage.

Additional Features

Connectors and Gold Fingers: Provide electrical and optical interfaces, ensuring proper power-up sequencing and signal integrity. Dust Caps and Boots: Protect fiber connectors and ensure secure module attachment. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM): Enables real-time monitoring of module performance, adhering to SFF-8472 standards.

Optical Modulation and Transmission

Optical modules employ various modulation techniques, including on-off keying (NRZ), pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4), and coherent modulation (DP-QPSK, QAM-16). Tunable lasers and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) allow modules to support multiple wavelengths for high-capacity networks.

Summary

In essence, an optical module integrates TOSA, ROSA, and PCBA within a protective housing to perform high-speed electro-optical and opto-electrical conversions. The design ensures efficient signal transmission, precise monitoring, and compatibility with network standards, making it a critical component in modern optical communication systems.
