How to measure the resistance after splicing optical cables

After splicing optical fibers, resistance or loss is measured using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or an Optical Power Meter with a light source to ensure low splice loss and proper continuity. Methods to Measure Splice Loss1. Optical Power Meter and Light Source (LSPM/OLTS) This method measures the optical power before and after the splice to determine insertion loss.

A calibrated laser light source is connected to one end of the fiber, and an optical power meter is connected to the other end. The difference in measured power indicates the splice loss. Typical single-mode fiber splices should have a loss of 0.

1–0. 3 dB, and if the loss exceeds 0. 3 dB, the splice may need to be redone.

2.

Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) An OTDR sends light pulses down the fiber and measures the backscattered light to detect splice points, connector losses, and faults.

The OTD

R provides a visual trace showing the location and magnitude of each splice loss. This method is especially useful for long-haul cables with multiple splices, as it allows testing of individual splices and the overall fiber span.

OTD

R testing is typically performed at 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths for single-mode fibers. 3. Visual Inspection and Splice Estimation Modern fusion splicers often include an optical imaging system that visually inspects the splice and estimates loss.

Features like halos, bubbles, or misalignment can indicate poor splicing. While this method provides a quick check, it should be complemented with OTDR or power meter measurements for accurate loss quantification.

Best Practices

Calibration: Always calibrate the optical power meter with a known light source before testing. Launch and Receive Cables: Use launch (1 km) and receive reels to ensure accurate measurement of connector and splice losses. Mode Conditioning: For multimode fibers, achieve Equilibrium Mode Distribution (EMD) to avoid measurement errors.

Standards Compliance: Follow industry standards such as ITU-T G. 652, IEC 60793-2-50, and TIA/EIA for acceptable splice loss limits. By combining OTDR testing, optical power measurements, and visual inspection, technicians can accurately measure the resistance (loss) after splicing optical fibers and ensure the network meets performance specifications.
