Fiber Optic Terminal Box Technical Parameters

Fiber optic terminal boxes are designed to protect, organize, and manage fiber cables, with key parameters including housing material, environmental protection, fiber capacity, cable entry/exit design, and internal fiber management.

Housing and Environmental Protection

The outer casing of an FTB is typically made from impact-resistant materials such as cold-rolled steel or high-strength plastic, often with surface treatments like powder coating or dim blowing plastic for durability and aesthetics. For outdoor deployments, the housing must be dust-proof, watertight, and corrosion-resistant, often rated IP65 or IP68, and capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -25°C to 45°C. Many outdoor units include locks to prevent unauthorized access and protect against signal tapping.

Fiber Capacity and Adapter ConfigurationFTBs are designed to accommodate a range of fiber counts, commonly from 4 to 48 cores, depending on the type and size of the box. They can support SC, FC, or ST adapters, with configurations such as 8-core SC or 12-core FC/ST adapters. The internal trays allow for fusion splicing and secure storage of excess fiber, ensuring minimal bending and signal loss.

Cable Entry and Exit

The boxes feature 1–2 cable entrances and multiple fiber exits, with oil-resistant NBR seals to maintain flexibility and environmental protection. This design allows for both pigtail output and adapter output, providing flexibility for different network layouts.

Internal Fiber Management

Inside the FTB, fibers are organized using splice trays, adapter panels, and coiling areas to prevent stress and maintain signal integrity. The box provides mechanical termination for incoming cables, strain relief, and grounding provisions to protect against electrical hazards and lightning strikes. Excess fiber is carefully coiled and stored to facilitate maintenance and future expansion.

Types and DeploymentFTBs come in wall-mounted, rack-mounted, indoor, and outdoor variants. Wall-mounted boxes are compact for small-scale deployments, while rack-mounted boxes support higher port densities in data centers. Outdoor boxes are ruggedized for harsh environments, and indoor boxes serve as transition points between upstream and horizontal cables.

Summary of Key Technical Parameters

Housing Material: Cold-rolled steel or high-strength plastic with protective coatingEnvironmental Rating: IP65/IP68, temperature range -25°C to 45°CFiber Capacity: 4–48 cores, depending on modelAdapter Types: SC, FC, STCable Entry/Exit: 1–2 entrances, multiple exits, NBR sealsInternal Management: Splice trays, coiling areas, strain relief, groundingDeployment Types: Wall-mounted, rack-mounted, indoor, outdoor These parameters ensure that fiber optic terminal boxes provide reliable, flexible, and secure management of fiber networks, supporting both indoor and outdoor FTTx applications.
