Remove the optical fiber from the optical module

To safely disconnect an optical fiber from an optical module, first release the cable latch, gently remove the fiber, then unlock and pull out the module while using dust caps to protect the connectors.

Step-by-

Step Procedure1. Power Down or Disable the Interface (Optional but Recommended) If possible, gracefully shut down the interface on the device using its management interface (CLI or GUI) to prevent link issues or data loss. 2.

Wear ES

D Protection Always wear a grounded ESD wrist strap and work on an ESD-safe mat to prevent electrostatic discharge that could damage the module. 3.

Disconnect the Fiber Cable

Press the latch on the fiber connector to release it. Gently pull the fiber straight out from the optical module without twisting or bending the cable. Immediately place a dust cap on the fiber connector to prevent contamination.

4.

Prepare the Optical Module for Removal

Identify the module's latch mechanism.

For SF

P modules, this is usually a pull-tab or bail latch. Flip or pull the latch according to the module type (e.g., pull the bail 90 degrees outward for SFP, or use the horizontal pull tab for QSFP modules),. 5.

Remove the Optical Module

Gently pull the module straight out of the port in a horizontal direction. Avoid forcing the module, as this can damage the module or the host port. Once removed, place a dust cap on the module's optical interface to protect it from dust and debris.

6.

Store or Replace

If storing the module, keep it in an anti-static bag or container. If replacing, follow proper installation procedures for the new module.

Additional Tips

Always handle the fiber by the connector body, not the cable itself, to avoid stress on the fiber. Clean the fiber end-face before reconnecting to ensure optimal signal quality. Never look directly into an active fiber port, even if it is Class 1 laser safe.

Following these steps ensures safe disconnection of optical fibers, protects sensitive components, and maintains the longevity of both the fiber and the optical module.
