Optical Splitter Broadband Equipment

An optical splitter is a passive device that divides a single optical signal into multiple outputs, enabling efficient sharing of a fiber connection among multiple users in broadband networks. What is an Optical Splitter? An optical splitter (also called a fiber optic splitter or beam splitter) is a passive component that splits an incoming light signal into two or more output signals, or combines multiple signals into one, without requiring electrical power.

This makes it ideal for broadband networks where reliability and low maintenance are critical. Splitters are widely used in FTTH, PON, GPON, XGS-PON, and other passive optical networks to allow a single fiber from the provider to serve multiple subscribers.

How Optical Splitters Work

Optical splitters operate based on light reflection, refraction, and waveguiding principles. In single-mode fibers, a portion of the light spreads into the cladding, allowing nearby fibers to capture part of the signal. This enables the redistribution of optical power across multiple fibers.

For example, a 1x4 splitter divides one input fiber into four outputs, each carrying roughly one-fourth of the original signal power.

Types of Optical Splitters

Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Splitters: Made by fusing and tapering fibers together; suitable for small split ratios and cost-effective applications. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters: Use waveguide technology on a silica substrate; ideal for larger split ratios (1x8, 1x16, 1x32, 1x64) and provide uniform signal distribution. Single-mode vs.

Multimode: Single-mode splitters are used for long-distance broadband, while multimode splitters are suitable for short-distance or LAN applications.

Split Ratios and Network Design

Splitters are available in various split ratios, such as 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, 1x16, 1x32, and 1x64. The choice depends on the network architecture and subscriber density. Centralized splitting places splitters at a central office or cabinet, allowing flexible customer assignment, while distributed splitting places splitters closer to subscribers in closures or pedestals, which is less flexible but can reduce fiber usage.

Applications in Broadband NetworksFTTH Networks: A single fiber can serve multiple homes using splitters, reducing infrastructure costs.

PO

N Systems: Splitters enable point-to-multipoint communication, supporting GPON, XGS-PON, and emerging 25G/50G standards. Bidirectional Communication: Most splitters support two-way signals, essential for internet, video, and voice services.

Key Advantages

Passive Operation: No power required, suitable for remote or outdoor locations. Compact Design: Fits into patch panels, ODFs, or outdoor enclosures. Cost Efficiency: Reduces the number of fibers needed, lowering deployment costs.

Optical splitters are fundamental for modern broadband networks, enabling efficient, scalable, and cost-effective fiber distribution to multiple users while maintaining high signal quality.
