Laser diode light intensity

Laser diode light intensity is primarily defined by its optical power output, threshold current, slope efficiency, and temperature-dependent behavior.

Light-

Current Relationship (L-I Curve)The light intensity of a laser diode is closely related to the forward drive current, typically represented by the L-I curve, which plots optical power versus current. Below a certain threshold current, the diode emits only spontaneous emission, and lasing does not occur. Once the threshold is exceeded, the optical output increases sharply and ideally linearly with current.

Deviations from linearity, such as kinks or steps, can indicate mode hopping or defects in the diode.

Slope Efficiency

Slope efficiency is the incremental change in optical power per unit increase in forward current above the threshold. It is a key parameter for evaluating the performance linearity of the laser diode. High slope efficiency indicates that small increases in current produce significant increases in light intensity, which is critical for precise optical control.

Temperature Dependence

Laser diode intensity is highly sensitive to temperature. As temperature rises, the threshold current increases, and the optical power at a given current decreases. This requires careful thermal management and often the use of automatic power control (APC) circuits to maintain stable output.

Shorter wavelength diodes are particularly sensitive to temperature variations.

Monitoring and Control

Many laser diode modules include a photodiode to monitor output intensity. The photodiode current is proportional to the emitted light, allowing feedback control to maintain constant optical power and prevent overdriving, which could lead to catastrophic optical damage (COD). Proper monitoring ensures reliability and extends the diode's operational life.

Additional Characteristics

Coherence and directivity: Laser diodes emit highly coherent, narrow-spectrum light with strong directional output. Maximum optical power: Exceeding the rated power can cause thermal runaway or facet damage. Linearity and kinks: Nonlinearities in the L-I curve can affect analog signal transmission and must be characterized during production.

In summary, the light intensity of a laser diode is determined by the interplay of drive current, threshold behavior, slope efficiency, temperature, and feedback control. Understanding these characteristics is essential for designing reliable laser systems and ensuring consistent optical performance.
