AOC optical cable with bend

Active Optical Cables (AOCs) are flexible fiber-optic cables with a minimum bend radius requirement to prevent damage and maintain signal integrity. What is an AOC? An Active Optical Cable (AOC) integrates optical fiber with transceivers at both ends, converting electrical signals to optical signals and back, allowing high-speed data transmission over longer distances than copper cables while remaining lightweight and thin.

AO

Cs are widely used in data centers, high-performance computing, HDMI connections, and storage systems due to their low power consumption, EMI immunity, and ease of deployment. Bend Radius and FlexibilityAOCs are thinner and more flexible than traditional copper cables, but they are sensitive to bending. The minimum bending radius is critical to prevent cable breakage or transmission errors: For SFP AOCs, the minimum bend radius should be at least 20 times the cable diameter.

Excessive bending can cause visible damage and signal anomalies.

For HDM

I 2. 1 AOCs, the bend radius can be as small as 45 mm, allowing installation in tighter spaces without compromising signal integrity. In general, AOCs are designed for short to medium distances (typically 3–30 meters in data centers), and bending beyond the recommended radius can permanently damage the fiber.

Installation Tips

Avoid sharp bends: Always maintain the recommended bend radius during routing and installation. Use open trays or racks: AOCs are best deployed in open access areas to reduce stress on the cable and simplify maintenance. Check for damage: If transmission issues occur, inspect the cable for over-bending or physical damage.

Plan cable paths: Because AOCs are thinner and more flexible, they can improve airflow and reduce congestion in high-density racks. Advantages of AOCsHigh-speed transmission: Supports data rates from 12G to 400G depending on the type. Lightweight and thin: Easier to manage in dense deployments.

EMI and RF

I resistant: Optical signals are immune to electromagnetic interference. Lower power consumption: Electronics built into the cable reduce overall energy usage in data centers. In summary, AOCs provide high-performance, flexible connectivity, but careful attention to the minimum bend radius is essential to maintain reliability and prevent damage.

Proper installation in open trays or racks and avoiding sharp bends ensures optimal performance and longevity of the cable.
