How to install cable tray ramp supports

Installing a cable tray ramp requires careful planning, proper support, and adherence to electrical codes to ensure safe and reliable cable routing.

Planning the Route

Before installation, plan the tray path including ramps or elevation changes. Mark the route using a chalk line or laser level, considering clearance from other utilities, load capacity, and cable separation requirements. Identify locations for bends, tees, and risers to ensure smooth cable transitions.

Selecting Tray Type

Choose the appropriate tray type based on cable size, weight, and environment. Ladder trays are ideal for power cables and allow ventilation, while ventilated or solid-bottom trays support smaller control or instrumentation cables. For corrosive or high-moisture environments, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) trays provide corrosion resistance and non-conductivity.

Support and Mounting

Install supports at proper intervals, typically 1. 5 to 3 meters apart, depending on tray type and load. For ramps, ensure supports are center-hung or wall-mounted to maintain alignment and prevent sagging.

Maximum load per hanger usually ranges from 318 kg to 340 kg, so verify tray load ratings. Use threaded rods, anchor bolts, and brackets suitable for the mounting surface.

Installing the Ramp

Align trays carefully along the ramp slope, ensuring a smooth transition for cables. Connect sections using couplers or splice plates, tightening all fasteners securely. Deburr edges after cutting trays to prevent cable damage.

Maintain proper fill ratios, typically not exceeding 50% of tray capacity, to avoid overheating.

Safety and Compliance

Wear PP

E including gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat.

Follow NE

C Article 392 or local regulations for cable tray installation, grounding, and bonding. Avoid using trays as walkways or ladders, and ensure all components are compatible and tested as a system.

Final Checks

After installation, verify that the ramp is level, secure, and free of obstructions. Ensure cables can be pulled smoothly without sharp bends or excessive tension. Properly installed ramps improve cable longevity, facilitate maintenance, and maintain compliance with electrical safety standards.
