How to test the light output of a pigtail fiber

You can test a pigtail fiber for light using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL), a light source and power meter, or even a smartphone camera for infrared detection. Using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL)A VFL is a simple, eye-safe tool that emits visible red light (around 650 nm) through the fiber. To test a pigtail fiber: Connect the VFL to one end of the pigtail using the appropriate connector or adapter.

Observe the other end of the fiber. If the fiber is continuous and transmitting light, you will see a red glow at the far end or at any points where light leaks due to faults.

VF

Ls can also help locate breaks, bends, or bad splices along the fiber. Using a Light Source and Power MeterFor a more precise measurement: Connect a light source to one end of the pigtail and a power meter to the other. Measure the output power.

A reading above zero indicates that light is passing through the fiber. This method is more accurate for checking attenuation or end-to-end signal loss, especially in professional installations. Using a Smartphone Camera (Infrared Detection)Some smartphone cameras can detect infrared light from active fiber links (typically 850–1550 nm): Aim your phone camera at the fiber connector while the fiber is transmitting.

The camera sensor may show a faint glow, indicating that the fiber is carrying light. This method is quick and inexpensive but less precise than a VFL or power meter.

Safety Considerations

Never look directly into the fiber end when it is connected to an active laser source, as infrared light can cause permanent eye damage. Use proper adapters and avoid touching the fiber end faces to prevent contamination or damage.

Summary

For quick verification, a VFL is the most practical tool. For accurate measurements of light transmission or attenuation, use a light source and power meter. For a low-cost, informal check, a smartphone camera can detect infrared light.

Always follow safety precautions to protect your eyes and maintain fiber integrity.
