How to measure melting point with a spectrometer

Melting points are generally measured using thermal analysis techniques, not spectrometers, because spectrometers detect molecular mass or light absorption rather than phase transitions. Why Spectrometers Are Not Used for Melting PointsA mass spectrometer measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions in a sample, while other spectrometers (e.g., UV-Vis, IR, NMR) detect light absorption or molecular vibrations. These instruments do not directly detect the phase change from solid to liquid, which is the defining feature of a melting point.

Therefore, a spectrometer cannot provide a direct melting point measurement.

Standard Methods for Melting Point Determination

Capillary Tube Method

Fill a thin glass capillary tube (1 mm diameter) with 2–3 mm of finely ground solid. Insert the tube into a melting point apparatus or heated block. Heat slowly (1 °C/min) and observe the sample.

Record the temperature when the solid starts to collapse (start of melting) and when it becomes completely clear (end of melting).

Digital Melting Point Apparatus

Modern instruments, like the DigiMelt or METTLER TOLEDO Melting Point Excellence, use a video camera and automated detection to determine the melting range. The apparatus measures the transmittance of light through the sample as it melts, which is a form of optical detection rather than spectrometry.

Melting Point Range and Purity

A narrow melting range indicates high purity, while impurities lower and broaden the range. Compare the observed melting range with literature values to identify the compound.

Alternative Thermal Analysis Techniques

If you want to use instrumentation beyond visual observation: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) can measure melting points by detecting heat flow associated with phase transitions. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) can sometimes indicate melting indirectly by changes in sample mass or thermal behavior.

Summary

While spectrometers are excellent for molecular identification and mass analysis, melting points are best measured using capillary tubes, digital melting point apparatus, or thermal analysis techniques like DSC. Spectrometers do not detect the solid-to-liquid phase change directly, so they are not suitable for this purpose.
