Wiring from the home electricity meter to the distribution box

Connecting a residential electric meter to a breaker box requires proper service entrance wiring, grounding, and adherence to safety codes, and should be performed by a licensed electrician.

Overview

The wire connecting the meter to the breaker box, known as the service entrance cable (SER), carries electricity from the utility meter to the main distribution panel. It typically consists of two hot wires, one neutral wire, and a ground conductor, and is designed to handle high voltage and amperage safely. The meter socket serves as the demarcation point between the utility supply and your home's internal wiring.

Key Steps

Obtain Permits and Coordinate with Utility Before any work, you must secure the necessary permits from your local building department and coordinate a temporary power shutoff with the utility company. This ensures compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations. De-energize the System The utility must disconnect power, and a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure should be implemented to prevent accidental re-energization while working.

Install the Meter Socket Mount the meter base securely on the exterior wall. Identify the line side terminals (incoming from utility) and load side terminals (outgoing to breaker box). The neutral bar is typically located in the center of the meter base.

Run the Service Entrance Cable Use appropriately sized copper or aluminum conductors based on your home's electrical load. The cable should be encased in conduit or protective sheathing and securely fastened along its path to the breaker box. Connect Wires to the MeterHot wires (black/red): Connect to the top terminals (line side) of the meter socket.

Neutral wire (white): Connect to the neutral bar in the center of the meter base. Ground wire (bare or green): Bond to the meter base ground terminal. Connect Wires to the Breaker BoxHot wires: Connect to the main breaker terminals.

Neutral wire: Connect to the neutral bus bar. Ground wire: Connect to the grounding bus bar. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

Inspection and Testing After wiring, the installation must be inspected by the local authority. Test all connections before re-energizing the system to ensure proper operation and safety.

Safety Considerations

High voltage hazard: The service entrance carries 120/240V at high amperage, which can cause severe injury or fire if mishandled. Professional installation recommended: Most jurisdictions require a licensed electrician to perform this work. Correct wire sizing: Using undersized conductors can lead to overheating and fire hazards.

Proper grounding: Ensures safety and accurate meter readings. Following these steps ensures a safe, code-compliant connection from the utility meter to your home's electrical distribution box, providing reliable power to all circuits.
