How to handle cable laying through cable trays

Proper cable laying in trays ensures safety, compliance with NEC standards, and long-term system reliability.

Selecting the Right Cable Tray

Choose a tray type based on cable type, environmental conditions, and load requirements. Ladder trays are ideal for large power cables due to excellent ventilation and convenient anchor points, while ventilated troughs provide continuous support for smaller control or instrumentation cables. For corrosive or high-moisture environments, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) trays offer corrosion resistance and non-conductivity, enhancing safety.

Cable Preparation and Installation

Before installation, verify that cables meet design and safety requirements and inspect trays for damage. Lay cables in an organized, controlled manner to prevent excessive bending, which can damage insulation. Maintain minimum bend radii at tray entries and exits, and secure cables at regular intervals to prevent sagging.

Cable Fill and Spacing

Do not exceed 40% of tray capacity for power cables and 50% for control cables. Calculate the total cross-sectional area of all cables and compare it with the tray's maximum fill area according to NEC Table 392. 22.

Overfilling can cause overheating and reduce cable lifespan. Maintain proper spacing to allow heat dissipation and facilitate maintenance.

Grounding and Bonding

Metallic trays must be properly grounded and bonded to serve as equipment grounding conductors. This ensures safety and compliance with NEC standards, preventing electrical hazards.

Support and Routing

Determine support spans based on tray type and cable weight, using trapeze hangers for ceiling runs or cantilever brackets for wall-mounted trays. Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access. Avoid installing trays in hoistways or enclosed spaces, and ensure accessibility for future maintenance.

Fire Safety and Separation

When trays pass through walls or floors, implement fire-stopping measures to prevent fire spread. Separate high-power and low-power cables to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI). Use tray-rated cables suitable for the environment, including riser-rated or plenum-rated Ethernet cables where applicable.

Maintenance and Identification

Label cables clearly with markers for easy identification during maintenance. Proper layout and organization improve system reliability and simplify future upgrades or troubleshooting. Following these guidelines ensures a safe, efficient, and code-compliant cable tray installation, reducing risks of overheating, mechanical damage, and operational failures while facilitating long-term maintenance.
