How to connect 24-core optical cables

Two 24-core optical cables can be connected using fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, or connector-based patching, with fusion splicing providing the most reliable long-term performance.

Methods for Connecting Multi-

Core Optical Cables1. Fusion Splicing (Recommended for Permanent Connections) Fusion splicing aligns each fiber core under a microscope and fuses them with an electric arc, creating a continuous optical path with minimal signal loss (typically 0. 02–0.

05 dB per splice). For 24-core cables, this requires careful preparation: Strip and clean each fiber core using a fiber stripper and isopropyl alcohol. Cleave fibers precisely with a precision cleaver.

Use a multi-fiber fusion splicer capable of handling ribbon or bundled fibers. Protect the spliced fibers with heat-shrink sleeves or splice trays. 2.

Mechanical Splicing (Quick, No Power Required) Mechanical splicing aligns fibers inside a plastic housing with index-matching gel. This method is faster and suitable for temporary or emergency connections but has slightly higher insertion loss than fusion splicing. Steps include: Strip and clean the fiber ends.

Insert fibers into the mechanical splice fixture. Ensure proper alignment and secure the housing. Protect the splice with a clamp or enclosure.

3.

Connector-

Based Connections (Patch Cord and Adapter Method) For connections inside cabinets or patch panels, using pre-terminated connectors with adapters and patch cords is preferred. This method allows flexible reconfiguration and easy maintenance: Inspect and clean all connectors (SC, LC, MPO, etc.) to remove dust and oil. Insert connectors into adapter panels or couplers.

Use patch cords to bridge the two cables, ensuring each core aligns correctly. Hybrid adapters can be used if connector types differ. Special Considerations for 24-Core CablesCore Mapping: Ensure each fiber core in the first cable matches the corresponding core in the second cable to maintain signal integrity.

Ribbon vs Loose Tube: Ribbon cables allow simultaneous splicing of multiple fibers, while loose-tube cables require individual handling. Protection: Use splice trays, clamps, or enclosures to prevent bending, tension, or environmental damage. Signal Loss: Minimize bending and micro-gaps; each joint adds some loss, so careful alignment is critical.
