Is the cable tray ladder type or the trough type

Cable trays can be either ladder type or trough type, depending on their design and application.

Ladder-

Type Cable Tray

A ladder-type cable tray consists of two longitudinal side rails connected by transverse rungs, forming a structure similar to a ladder. This open design allows excellent ventilation, which helps prevent cable overheating and reduces the need for derating the current-carrying capacity of power cables. Ladder trays are mechanically strong, suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications, long spans, and large bundles of power or instrumentation cables.

Cables can enter or exit at any point along the tray, making maintenance and future modifications easier. Optional covers can protect cables from environmental factors like UV radiation, snow, or vandalism.

Trough-

Type Cable Tray

A trough-type cable tray, also called a ventilated or perforated tray, features a continuous or partially ventilated bottom with solid side rails but no transverse rungs. This design provides continuous support for cables while allowing moderate airflow through perforations. Trough trays are generally used for light to medium cable loads, offering a balance between structural support and cable protection.

They are often chosen for aesthetic reasons in public areas or buildings without false ceilings, where organized and visible cable runs are preferred.

Key Differences

Structure: Ladder trays have rungs; trough trays have a solid or perforated bottom without rungs. Ventilation: Ladder trays provide superior airflow; trough trays allow moderate ventilation. Load Capacity: Ladder trays are stronger and suitable for heavy cables; trough trays are better for lighter loads.

Applications: Ladder trays are ideal for industrial or utility-scale installations; trough trays are often used in commercial or aesthetic-sensitive environments. In summary, whether a cable tray is ladder type or trough type depends on its structural design and intended application. Ladder trays are open and robust for heavy-duty use, while trough trays provide continuous support with moderate ventilation for lighter or more visible installations.
