Requirements for Grounding Rectification of Distribution Boxes

Distribution boxes must be grounded using low-impedance conductors, properly sized wires, and bonded connections to ensure safety, fault clearance, and compliance with standards.

Grounding Conductors and Wire Sizing

Each distribution box and controller must be grounded using a dedicated ground wire.

In the U

S, a 10 AWG (5. 26 mm²) wire is standard, while in other markets, a 6 mm² wire is recommended. For connections between mounting plates and spindles, larger conductors such as 16 mm² (or 6 AWG in the US) may be used to maintain low resistance, especially for longer tool cables.

Equipment grounding conductors should be sized equal to the phase conductors to reduce impedance and improve fault clearing times.

Grounding Resistance

The total ground resistance between all system parts should be less than 0. 1 Ohm. When multiple grounding paths exist, resistances in parallel reduce the total resistance, ensuring safe operation even with long cables or multiple spindles.

For example, a 60 m tool cable with a 16 mm² ground wire achieves a total resistance of 57 mOhm, which is within safe limits.

Bonding and Equipotential Connections

Bonding involves connecting all metallic, non-current-carrying components to form a continuous conductive path. This ensures that all parts are at the same potential, reducing the risk of electric shock and equipment damage. Grounding should include the neutral bus bar of transformers, LV cabinets, mounting plates, and any metallic enclosures.

Continuous ground wires should connect MV and LV equipment, surge arresters, and other critical components to establish an equipotential zone.

Installation Considerations

Ground rods should be installed in formal soil where possible, with lengths sufficient to achieve low resistance. In constrained spaces, tinned copper-bonded steel or bare copper conductors can be used to connect multiple rods and equipment. All grounding connections must be made by a qualified electrician to ensure compliance and safety.

Surge protection devices should be grounded through dedicated conductors to safely divert transients to earth.

Standards and Best Practices

Follow IEE

E recommended practices for system grounding, ensuring low-impedance paths for fault currents and proper operation of overcurrent protective devices. Consider exceeding minimum NEC requirements for improved safety and power quality. Ensure that all metallic enclosures, raceways, and equipment grounding conductors are bonded into a single electrically continuous system.

By adhering to these requirements, distribution boxes will maintain safe operation, effective fault clearance, and compliance with industrial grounding standards.
