Fiber optic drop cable splicing in optical distribution box

Drop fiber optic cables are spliced to the distribution network using fusion or mechanical splicing inside a protective distribution box or splice closure to ensure low loss and long-term reliability.

Overview of Drop Fiber Optic Cables

Drop cables are the final segment of an FTTH network, connecting the optical distribution box (ODB) to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) at the customer premises. They typically contain 1–4 fibers and are designed for short-distance, flexible deployment. At the distribution box, the drop cable is connected to the feeder or distribution network via fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, or optical connectors.

Fusion splicing is preferred for its low insertion loss and long-term stability, while mechanical splicing is faster but less reliable and may degrade over time.

Splicing Methods

Fusion Splicing: Uses a fusion splicer to weld fiber ends together, providing minimal signal loss and high mechanical strength. Mechanical Splicing: Aligns fibers using a mechanical device and index-matching gel. It is quicker but more prone to reflection and attenuation over time.

Preparing the Distribution Box

Select the appropriate splice closure: Dome closures are common for drop cables due to ease of handling and reliable sealing, while inline closures are used for splicing two identical cables or repairing damaged sections. Install splice trays: Fibers are arranged neatly in trays to prevent stress or bending. Each tray holds spliced fibers and allows for organized storage of excess fiber length.

Cable preparation: Strip the outer jacket and strength members according to manufacturer instructions. Ensure proper lengths of buffer tubes and fibers for splicing and storage. Grounding and bonding: Metallic strength members or shielding must be properly grounded to prevent electrical hazards.

Splicing Procedure

Clean and cleave fibers: Use proper tools to ensure smooth fiber ends. Perform splicing: Either fusion or mechanical splicing is performed inside the splice tray. Protect splices: Place spliced fibers in the tray and secure them to prevent movement or stress.

Seal the closure: Ensure the closure is properly sealed to protect against moisture, dust, and mechanical damage.

Safety Considerations

Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling fibers. Avoid looking directly into fiber ends that may carry laser light, as it can cause serious eye damage. Follow manufacturer instructions for strain relief, sealing, and fiber arrangement to maintain network reliability.

Best Practices

Use fusion splicing for critical connections to minimize loss. Maintain organized fiber routing in trays to prevent bending or pinching. Ensure proper strain relief for drop cables entering the distribution box.

Regularly inspect and test splices for insertion loss and reflectance to ensure network performance. By following these steps, drop fiber optic cables can be reliably spliced and connected to distribution boxes, ensuring long-term network stability and minimal signal degradation.
