Requirements for galvanized fire-resistant cable trays

Fire-resistant galvanized cable trays must meet strict material, installation, and fireproofing standards to ensure safety and structural integrity in electrical systems.

Material Selection

Galvanized Steel: Hot-dip or pre-galvanized steel is preferred for corrosion resistance and mechanical strength in indoor and outdoor environments.

Fire-

Resistant Coatings: Trays may be coated with fire-resistant paints or flame-retardant composites to enhance fire performance. Mechanical Strength: Tray width and thickness must support the full cable load without deformation.

Installation Standards

Alignment and Leveling: Horizontal deviation ≤2 mm/m, vertical deviation ≤3 mm/m; trays must be level, plumb, and securely mounted. Connections: Use dedicated splice plates and bolts; ensure electrical continuity with grounding jumpers at each connection point. Cable Arrangement: Lay cables neatly in parallel, avoiding twists and crossovers; secure with cable ties or clips at regular intervals.

Directional Changes: Use horizontal/vertical elbows, T-junctions, and cross-junctions to maintain mechanical stability and structured appearance.

Fireproofing Measures

Tray Materials: Galvanized steel, stainless steel, fire-resistant coated trays, or flame-retardant plastic composites. Firestopping at Penetrations: Seal openings in walls, slabs, or shafts with fire-rated boards, firestop packs, mastic, or mineral wool. Gaps around cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm.

Waterstop Requirements: At floor-level or slab penetrations, provide a waterstop of at least 50 mm; at slab penetrations, 20–30 mm of firestopping with a fire-support plate at the top. Cover Plates: Use square, evenly painted cover plates to close openings, ensuring no visible cracks or voids.

Compliance and Standards

Certifications: Cable trays should comply with relevant national and international standards, such as UL, NEMA, or CE marking, depending on the region. Testing: Trays must be tested for mechanical and electrical performance, including fire resistance, load-bearing capacity, and grounding continuity.

Additional Considerations

Segregation: Separate power and signal cables to minimize electromagnetic interference. Maintenance: Remove sharp edges or debris inside trays to prevent cable damage. Environmental Suitability: For corrosive or high-humidity environments, consider stainless steel or coated alternatives.

By adhering to these technical requirements, fire-resistant galvanized cable trays provide safe, durable, and compliant cable management in industrial and commercial electrical installations.
