Indoor Distribution Box Installation Standards

Indoor distribution boxes must be installed according to strict pre-installation, wiring, grounding, and operational standards to ensure safety, compliance, and reliable performance.

Pre-

Installation Requirements

Before installation, the indoor environment must be fully prepared: ceilings and walls should be completed with no water leakage, and the ground leveling layer must be finished. Foundations, embedded conduits, and cable trenches under cabinets or boxes should be inspected and approved. For surface-mounted boxes, wall and ceiling finishes must be complete, while flush-mounted boxes require pre-inspected reserved holes and conduits for wiring.

Surge protective devices (SPD) must meet design specifications, and grounding connections to the PE bar should be verified. Layouts and safety clearances must comply with design requirements, and all bolts and anti-loosening components should be properly installed, with fire sealing applied if required.

Wiring Standards

Secondary circuit wiring must meet design specifications, with insulation rated at least 450/750V. Copper conductors for current circuits should be no less than 2. 5mm², and other circuits no less than 1.

5mm². Circuits of different voltage levels, AC/DC lines, and control lines should be bundled separately and clearly identified. Cable bending radii must comply with allowable limits, and wire connections should avoid core damage.

Inside the box, wiring should be neat, untwisted, and connections tight without damaging wire cores.

Distribution Box Installation

Boxes should be made of non-combustible materials, securely installed at the correct height, and have covers flush with walls. Circuit numbering must be complete and accurate. Main switches over 80A require arc extinguishers, and cable entrances must be properly sealed.

Multiple grounding ends in the same box are prohibited, and joints should not be placed inside the box. Electrical labeling should follow a two-level system for construction and client sides, and tripping sequences must be stepwise from small to large. Surge Protective Device (SPD) InstallationSPD models and layouts must follow design requirements.

Connection wires should be short, straight, and not exceed 0. 5m, with grounding wires positioned away from outlets.

Grounding and Safety

The metal frame and foundation steel must be reliably connected to protective conductors. Doors with electrical devices require yellow-green insulated copper flexible wires of at least 4mm². Protective grounding (PE) bars should have exposed terminals for external connections, with cross-sectional areas meeting national standards (GB 50054).

Draw-out and drawer-type cabinets must operate smoothly, with aligned contacts and no jamming. Installation Qualification (IQ) ProtocolIQ involves verifying that all equipment is installed according to manufacturer and site specifications. Components must be uniquely identified, installed correctly, and documented for maintenance and change control.

Verification can be done via visual inspection or approved documentation. Acceptance criteria include proper installation, correct wiring, functional SPDs, and compliance with design and safety standards.

NEMA Enclosure Considerations

Indoor distribution boxes typically conform to NEMA Type 1 or Type 2 enclosures, providing protection against access to hazardous parts and ingress of solid objects. Type 2 additionally protects against light water splashes, ensuring safety and durability in indoor environments. By following these standards, indoor distribution boxes achieve safe, reliable, and compliant operation, minimizing electrical hazards and ensuring proper functionality for power distribution and control systems.
