Secondary Relay Protection Test

Secondary injection testing allows verification of protective relay functionality safely by injecting simulated currents and voltages directly into the relay's secondary terminals.

Purpose of Secondary Injection Testing

Secondary injection testing is performed to validate the correct operation of protection relays and their schemes without energizing the primary equipment, minimizing risk to personnel and equipment. It ensures that relays respond correctly to simulated fault conditions, including overcurrent, phase-to-phase, and earth faults, and that programmed logic, time delays, and interlocks function as intended.

Key Advantages

Safety: The primary high-voltage system remains de-energized, reducing the risk of electrical hazards. Convenience: Relays can be tested in isolation without disrupting the main power system. Accuracy: Allows precise control of injected currents, voltages, phase angles, and timing to simulate realistic fault conditions.

Repeatability: Enables repeated testing of complex protection schemes without causing actual faults.

Equipment and Setup

Relay Test Set: Capable of injecting synthetic currents and voltages, controlling frequency, phase angles, and timing. Test Blocks or Plugs: Facilitate connection to relay secondary terminals while isolating the relay from the main system.

C

T Shorting Jumpers: Ensure CT secondary circuits are not open-circuited during testing. Safety Gear: Low-voltage gloves and other personal protective equipment as required.

Testing Procedure

Isolate the Relay: Disconnect the relay from the primary system using test blocks or plugs. Connect Test Equipment: Attach the relay test set to the secondary terminals of the relay.

Ensure C

T shorting jumpers are in place. Inject Test Signals: Apply currents and voltages that simulate fault conditions, including dynamic events like gradual current increases or voltage flicker. Observe Relay Response: Verify that the relay correctly identifies faults, sends trip signals, triggers alarms, and follows programmed logic and time delays.

Document Results: Record the relay's performance for commissioning, maintenance, or compliance purposes.

Types of Tests

Element Testing: Checks the accuracy of individual relay elements using secondary values. Logic Testing: Confirms that relay logic operates according to design diagrams and settings.

SCAD

A Integration Testing: Ensures the relay communicates correctly with control systems and triggers appropriate remote signals.

Best Practices

Follow manufacturer manuals and protection standards for relay configuration. Ensure all personnel are trained and competent in using test equipment and aware of safety protocols. Use version-controlled test plans to maintain consistency and traceability.

Perform secondary injection tests before primary injection to minimize risk to the LV side of equipment. Secondary injection testing is a critical step in commissioning and maintaining reliable protection systems, providing a safe, accurate, and repeatable method to verify relay performance and system protection integrity.
