Which type of flange is used for fiber optic cold connectors

Fiber optic cold connectors do not directly connect to flanges, but they can interface with flanged adapters or panels using standard mechanical alignment methods.

Understanding Cold Connectors

Fiber optic cold connectors, also known as mechanical splices, join two optical fibers without heat by aligning the fiber ends in a mechanical sleeve or connector housing. They are quick to install, cost-effective, and do not require power or fusion splicing equipment. Cold connectors typically terminate fibers with a standard ferrule that can be inserted into compatible adapters or sockets.

Flanges and Fiber Adapters

A flange is a physical shoulder on a fiber adapter that provides a fixed reference plane for mounting in a panel or enclosure. Flanged adapters constrain axial movement, improving alignment stability and repeatability, while flangeless adapters rely on panel cutouts and clips for positioning. The flange itself does not alter the optical interface geometry but ensures the adapter remains mechanically stable.

Compatibility

Cold connectors are designed to mate with standard fiber adapters such as LC, SC, or ST types. If the adapter is flanged, the cold connector can still be inserted into the adapter ferrule, but the flange serves only to secure the adapter in the panel, not to connect the fiber directly. In other words: The cold connector ferrule fits into the adapter sleeve.

The flange secures the adapter to a panel or enclosure. There is no direct mechanical connection between the cold connector and the flange itself.

Practical Implications

Cold connectors can be used in panels with flanged adapters without modification. The flange ensures stable positioning of the adapter, which indirectly supports the cold connector's alignment. For high-density or non-standard enclosures, flangeless adapters may be preferred, but cold connectors remain compatible.

In summary, fiber optic cold connectors interface with the adapter ferrule, not the flange, but flanged adapters provide mechanical stability that benefits the connection. Proper selection of adapter type ensures reliable alignment and low insertion loss in the network.
