AC cable tray specifications

AC cable trays come in various types, materials, and finishes, designed to support and protect electrical cables while complying with standards like NEMA VE 1, UL, and NEC.

Types of Cable Trays

Ladder Type: Features side rails connected by rungs, ideal for heavy power cables and long spans. Provides excellent ventilation and heat dissipation, commonly made from aluminum or steel. Solid Bottom Type: Offers full protection for cables, suitable for sensitive instrumentation or areas with dust and debris.

Can be equipped with solid covers for additional protection. Channel Type: Supports single branches of power or control cables, often used for communication, fire alarm, or instrumentation cabling. Can have ventilated or solid bottoms.

Wire Mesh (Basket) Type: Made of welded steel wire, lightweight and flexible, ideal for light-duty applications and complex routing. Trough Type: Enclosed design for aesthetic or protective purposes, often used in instrumentation and control applications.

Materials and Finishes

Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Steel (Hot-Dip Galvanized or Stainless): High strength, suitable for heavy-duty applications, with finishes like zinc coating (ASTM A123, ASTM B633) for corrosion protection. Fiberglass: Non-conductive, corrosion-resistant, used in chemical or wet environments.

Key Specifications

Rung Spacing: Typically 6–9 inches (150–230 mm) for ladder trays to maintain cable support and proper bend radius. Inside Depths and Widths: Vary by manufacturer and application; common widths range from 4 to 24 inches, depths from 2 to 8 inches. Load Capacity: Determined by material, span, and tray type; manufacturers provide section modulus and moment of inertia data for structural calculations.

Fittings: Includes bends, tees, elbows, drop-outs, and supports to complete the system. Standards and ComplianceNEMA VE 1: Metallic cable tray systems standard.
