09 Installation of Standardized Cable Trays

Standardized cable trays should be installed using manufacturer-approved components, following relevant electrical codes, and ensuring proper support, alignment, and coordination with other services.

Materials and Standards

Cable trays must be factory-made, heavy-duty, welded, and perforated, with all components from a single manufacturer to ensure compatibility and reliability. Materials typically include mild steel hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel, aluminum, or fiberglass, depending on environmental conditions and corrosion resistance requirements. Protective coatings should meet standards such as BS 729 for galvanization, with a minimum thickness of 55 microns.

All trays, fittings, and supports should comply with BS 7671, NFPA 70, or equivalent standards, and installation should follow QGEWC regulations and the latest IEE codes.

Pre-

Installation Preparation

Material Inspection: Verify all trays, ladders, and accessories against approved submittals. Remove damaged or non-compliant items immediately. Storage: Store trays horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports at 1-meter intervals, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.

Shop Drawings Review: Confirm tray layout, lengths, junction boxes, and branch circuits as per approved drawings.

Installation Guidelines

Supports and Spacing: Cable trays should be supported at regular intervals, with ladder rungs spaced a maximum of 300 mm. Flanges should be at least 50 mm deep. Height and Ventilation: Horizontal trays should be raised at least 15 cm from the finished floor.

Exposed trays in direct sunlight should have coverings to allow ventilation. Alignment and Coordination: Ensure trays are aligned and coordinated with other services, civil works, and electrical equipment. Avoid site fabrication; use only manufacturer-approved accessories.

Perforations and Construction: Use oval perforations for ventilation. Ladder-type trays are recommended for vertical runs. All edges should be rounded, and components accurately formed to close tolerances.

Load and Expansion: Ensure trays can accommodate additional cables and allow for replacement of rungs. Heavy-duty trays should have a minimum thickness of 1. 5 mm.

Safety and Best Practices

Cable trays are supports, not walkways; do not use them to support personnel. Install trays in accordance with tested and approved systems to ensure safety and structural integrity. Follow manufacturer instructions for application conditions, limitations, and environmental considerations.

Post-InstallationVerify alignment, secure all fittings, and ensure proper grounding. Document tray locations, junction boxes, and branch circuits for future maintenance and inspection. By adhering to these standards and procedures, cable tray installations will be safe, durable, and compliant with electrical codes, ensuring reliable cable management for the facility.
