Beam-interrupted fiber optic sensor

A beam-interrupted fiber optic sensor detects objects by monitoring when a light beam transmitted through a fiber optic path is blocked or diminished by an object. Working PrincipleBeam-interrupted fiber optic sensors, also known as through-beam or opposed-mode sensors, consist of two main components: a light transmitter and a receiver positioned opposite each other. The transmitter emits a continuous light beam through a fiber optic cable, which the receiver detects.

When an object passes between the transmitter and receiver, it interrupts or reduces the light intensity, triggering a detection signal ( ). This method is highly reliable for detecting opaque objects regardless of color, shape, or surface reflectivity ( ).

Components and Types

Fiber Optic Cables: Can be made of plastic (PMMA) for flexibility and small bending radii, or glass for long-distance transmission and harsh environments ( ).

Amplifier/

Controller: Processes the received light signal and converts it into an electrical output for automation systems ( ). Sensor Heads: Transmit and receive light; no electronics are present in the heads, making them suitable for tight or harsh spaces ( ).

Advantages

High reliability in dusty, dirty, or moisture-laden environments ( ). Precise detection over long distances, suitable for high-speed automation ( ). Insensitive to target color or reflectivity, unlike reflective sensors ( ).

Flexible installation using fiber optics in confined or dynamic spaces ( ). ApplicationsBeam-interrupted fiber optic sensors are widely used in factory automation, packaging, material handling, and safety systems. They are ideal for detecting opaque objects, registration marks, or small components in high-speed production lines ( ).

They are also preferred in environments where electronic sensors cannot be placed directly due to space constraints or harsh conditions ( ).

Installation Considerations

Proper alignment of the transmitter and receiver is critical for accurate detection ( ). Selection of fiber type depends on distance, environmental conditions, and flexibility requirements ( ). Regular maintenance may be needed in extremely dusty or reflective environments to ensure consistent performance ( ).

Beam-interrupted fiber optic sensors provide a robust and precise solution for object detection in industrial and automation applications, combining the advantages of fiber optics with the reliability of through-beam detection.
